Assessment of physical and neurologic findings to determine gestational age is performed by using the Ballard scoring system, in which 12 scores are totaled and a maturity rating is expressed in weeks of gestation. Gestational scoring is performed within the first few hours and repeated again at 24 hours after the newborn’s neurologic system has settled.
